Worldwide PSP releases for the week of August 17

There is nothing really new this week. There's just a handful of old games getting bargain bin pricing and a whole lot of empty space. This must not be very exciting to read about week in and week out ... writing about it isn't any peachier. Here's this week's (non)releases:

NA Games
  • no new releases
EU Games
  • No new releases
Asian Games:
Perhaps instead of writing words and sentences to convey that we're not getting any games for the entirety of the week, we should just write a single ellipses and be done with it.

Street Fighter Alpha hits PSN this Thursday

Most of us know that there are so few PS One titles on the North American PS Store and we're all wondering when the next wave of PS One games would be coming. While this isn't particularly a 'wave' per se (insert Hadouken jokes here), it is quite a powerful title with a lot of influence in the fighting-genre arena. We're talking about Street Fighter Alpha -- the first one. It was a title that prequeled the main Street Fighter series, fleshing out some of the world warriors' back stories.

If you missed it back in the day, then your chance to give the classic a try is coming. This Thursday, during the weekly scheduled PS Store update, Street Fighter Alpha will be available for download onto your PSP or your PS3. Capcom hasn't officially revealed the price yet, but we imagine it shouldn't be much different from other PS One classics.

[Thanks Eduardo!]

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of August 10

This week is all about Madden ... even in Asia. Can you believe it? They're getting Madden NFL 09, but not sharing Memories Off. Seriously, we didn't think the people of Asia (and Europe for that matter) liked American football. Even the Canadians do not 'get' the sport. Well, whatever, they can get it if they want to; we'll be too busy unboxing our blue PSPs to take any notice. Yeah, those sexy blue slims will be out Tuesday, and this blogger will be picking one up for himself.

PSP software support way down, recovery is likely

We knew software support for the PSP was relatively dire but this chart says it all. According to Siliconera, who've compiled a comprehensive analysis of publisher support, 2006 was the peak while 2007 saw a huge decline. The top six contributing publishers to the PSP's software library have all taken a considerable dip in scheduled titles, but Siliconera also points out that 2008 is actually starting to curve upward.

Does that mean we're on the cusps of a healthy and steady recovery? Possibly, as games like Dissidia: Final Fantasy and LocoRoco 2 are on the way this year, and future titles like Resistance: Retribution and The 3rd Birthday are also on the way. The report is a very good read; we suggest you check out the whole thing at Siliconera for an in-depth look.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of August 3

If a gamer turns on a PSP and there are no new games to play on it, does it bring gratification? See, this is the sort of philosophical inquiry that you'll have to ask yourself; look deep within and reflect. Go ahead take your time ... it looks like you'll have a lot of free time on your hands this week.

Well okay, there are new games this week ... for Japan. Even then, three out of the four are reprints. But hey, look on the bright side; at least Japan isn't refining their spirit and intellect like us!

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of July 27

It's raining outside and the weather is making us feel sleepy. Just like this rainstorm brewing outside our window, this week's PSP releases is giving us that lethargic vibe. We could use a little thunder.

NA Games:
  • No new releases

Phantasy Star Portable seems to be the only worthy title this week. With that said, we'll slip into an early slumber this evening.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of July 20

Okay, so there are no new games for North America this week again; however, if you've been keeping watch on E3, there are tons of awesome games to look forward to in the near future. We're talking Resistance Retribution and Super Stardust Portable. (Hands on impressions coming next week!)

Yikes. Japan really knows how to make us jealous, don't they?

Deal: Buy one PlayStation product, get another 50% off

Toys "R" Us is having a special promo for both our PSP and PS3 Fanboy readers. Buy any PS2, PSP or PS3 game, and get another game at 50% off. That's a pretty sweet deal for those that are interested in getting two games. You can see all the eligible titles here. Offer is valid until July 26th.

[Thanks, Brent S.!]

Deal: Final Fantasy Tactics for $20

PSP had a number of excellent SRPG games to choose from during last year's holiday season. Final Fantasy Tacticsc: The War of the Lions was one of them. The quintessential PS1 game got a makeover when it moved to PSP, with beautiful new cutscenes and a whole bevvy of new quests. The game is now available for a 50% discount on amazon.com -- $20. If you missed out on this title last year, this may be a good time to jump.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of July 13

As E3 is a-coming, we expected to have a more barren list of releases for this week. It seems that we were quite wrong about that. New games include anime platforming coming from the big-headed kids of Code Lyoko. NCAA 2009 represents the sports games, while that Go! Explore device thing-a-ma-jig is finally coming out in Europe.

Meanwhile, in Japan, Gundam continues to be milked dry. At the same time, there's more school-based romantic adventures in the form of HimeHibi. Oh, just when will we ever see a Gundam romance game?

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of July 6

Not much is going on this week. North America witnesses emptiness for the second week in a row, while Europe is lapping up all the games we got from the previous month.

Japan is finally getting God of War: Chains of Olympus. Also, the sight of Nobunaga's Ambition there makes this blogger question when will Koei ever bring a real Ambition game to the States? Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power on the PS2 doesn't count; it's essentially Kessen with slightly more micromanagement. Oh the questions we hardcore gamers ask sometimes ...

Some good deals here for those looking to expand their PSP collections.
Our pick? Viewtiful Joe. If you're looking for some mini-games, you may be interested in WTF. MLB and NBA are both rather solid sports titles for the handheld. Just make sure you avoid Gangs of London at all costs.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of June 29

There's nothing this week for North Americans. Seems we're slipping back into the dark ages again. However, John Koller says a dark age is not on the verge. He says the titles are coming. Hear that people? The titles are coming. We're looking forward to a PSP renaissance.

Elsewhere in the world, since there are places other than North America, we're seeing a lot of stuff that isn't really "new" per se.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of June 22

This week has a healthy set of games. It's always nice to pencil in a game name or two instead of "no new releases," which, if you've been following this weekly post every Sunday, is something we got used to seeing. As the summer movies come in, so will their games; hence, why we have both Hellboy and Wall-E this week.

The Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2 box art looks quite good. We're real suckers for flame designs and swirling energy.
